Marvel dropped a clip which "celebrates the movies" and showed us some clips/title announcement for phase 4 and I wanted to look at why Marvel Studios hasn't had an outright bad film for the past 13 years along with being the most successful franchise(grossing more than 20 billion dollars worldwide).
Now, I have been very critical of Marvel in my previous blogs and that was because of how formulaic Marvel had become with the same characters and story structure, it was a breath of fresh air to see some awesome projects in the near future
1. Marvel has a plan/ Kevin Feige: One of the most important reasons that Marvel works is that they have a unified vision, Kevin Feige is the brain behind every project. I'm not saying that Kevin looks at every project with a magnifying glass but it is only because of him that Marvel has had a uniform vision for the past 13 years, unlike DC whose movies are run by studio executives and cash-grabbing officials.
2. Marvel cares for its characters: Kevin was an executive producer in the first Fox X-Men movie and he wanted the characters to have their traditional costumes and wanted to adapt the comics faithfully, but the director Bryan Singer wanted the film to be grounded so he banned the entry of X-Men comics in shoot location, but Kevin used to smuggle comics to the actors who used to read it and when you have a person like Kevin behind the scenes of a giant studio who cares about what he creates, you know you have hit a jackpot, unlike DC which simply wants to bank on the popularity of superhero films and delivers movies that have no connection whatsoever
3. Marvel Plans: You wouldn't believe but the planning for Endgame started about 4-6 years before the films are released, it is because of this planning that they can make a streamlined universe unlike some others which have to rely on the concept of multiverse forcibly to make their universe make sense
4. Marvel's changing: Up until this point, the only different representation of characters that we had got was in the form of Black Panther. But after the release of the clip which gives me immense joy by saying that Marvel is changing. Shang-Chi will be the first time we will see a full-on Asian representation, Eternals will give us its first openly gay superhero in the form of Phastos played by Ryan Henry, Kamala Khan in the form of Ms, Marvel, Eternals will also show its first deaf superhero in the form of Makaari played by Lauren Ridloff who is deaf in real life, Eternals will also show its Bollywood side since Kumal Nanjiani will play Kingo who becomes a Bollywood star in the comics...Good work Marvel
5. Planning helps other directors: As I said earlier, that Marvel plans for its movies and it isn't just a broader plan but they actually decide their shots, action scenes early on, this is the reason why Marvel is able to hire relatively unknown directors for their work whose previous achievements have been completely different(e.g James Gunn, Russo Brothers, Taika Waititi, even Joss Whedon, Chloe Zhao and many others) and these directors are able to deliver what is required for them while also infusing their touch on these movies
But even after all this praise, Marvel needs to work on their tone in their movies, they have a huge problem where they degrade the quality of their emotional/tense moments for the bargain of jokes which most of the time doesn't work(e.g why would Thanos make bubbles come out of Star-Lord's gun after he was trying to kill Gamora in Infinity War.....I would think that Thanos would simply break the gun with the help of his reality stone)
So those were my thoughts, comment down below what would you like to see in future Marvel Projects
