Today I'll be ranking down every Harry Potter movie that was released excluding the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise(I'll make a separate blog once it's planned 5 movies are released or I'll update this blog). Let's jump into it. I'll be ranking these movies on it's face value and try not compare it with the books since in my opinion you cannot imitate a book on it's entirety as you need to sacrifice/change some content so as to balance the run-time but I will compare the films with the books with the movies when deemed necessary. This is simply my list and you may write down your list in the comment section. I'll be giving 2 scores for every movie, one when compared to book and other score as simply a movie in a franchise
8. Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince
This is the worst movie in the franchise because it is so not faithful to the books and I can ignore some of the liberties in screenplay writing when it doesn't affect the broader idea of the story(such as Goblet Of Fire) but Half-Blood prince simply adds/convolutes the story which makes it such an uninteresting watch. In the book, the aspect of teen drama is side-lined when compared to the main plot but in the movies, the aspect of teen drama is centered for 2/3 of the movie's run-time and we only runaway from it for the 3rd act. The relationship between Ginny and Harry is so well put in the books and this relationship simply doesn't work in the movies. But there surely are great moments in the film and that is the acting done by Tom Felton who truly shows the inner turmoil of Draco and what he goes through, the sound-track is great along with the action sequences, even Daniel Radcliffe gives a great performance along with the great conversation between Draco and Dumbledore. Though I do visit this movie once every few months but that is solely as a habit and I never look forward to watching this film while doing a marathon series
Book-Movie Score: 6/10
Movie Score: 7/10
Movies after this are those which I would happily watch any time of the day and not have any problem with it since all of them are great watch in their own sense
7. Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
The only problem with this movie is that it's the most forgettable film in the franchise, and this is due to the film being very decent. The story, acting, music, emotional beats and everything else is simply decent. The only silver lining is the acting done by Kenneth Branagh who perfectly impersonates Gilderoy Lockhart with charm. There isn't really much to hate about this movie except for the fact that it simply exists, though I would happily watch this film over Half-Blood Prince anyway
Book-Movie score: 7/10
Movie Score 7/10
6. Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
This movie too has just one problem, it doesn't have heart. There is just one emotional scene and that too occurs in the 3rd act otherwise it's a great action movie with great action, character with a great last fight
Book-Movie score: 6/10
Movie Score: 8/10
5. Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone
A really good movie. The most apt description I could give, another reason for me loving this movie is because of the nostalgia factor
Book-Movie score: 8/10
Movie Score: 9/10
4. Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
This film has great action, greatly written characters, tremendous emotional beats where we truly feel the inner turmoil of Harry along with his connection with Voldemort
Book-Movie score: 6/10(because the book is about 500 pages, so many things were left out which I personally don't really mind since it made the movie much better)
Movie Score: 9/10
3. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1
This film in my opinion is one of the most emotional movies in my opinion since this gives so much time for character growth and this results in a film that is much more character driven rather than plot drive, due to this reason many people wouldn't like this movie but for me this film is one of the best in the series with some surprisingly great action sequences
Book-Movie score: 7/10
Movie score 9/10
2. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2
This film truly is an epic conclusion with great character moments, tremendously heart-breaking ending, great fight sequences, best performance by every cast member and truly feels memorable that wouldn't break any potterheads' hearts
Book-Movie score: 7-8/10
Movie score: 9/10
1. Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban
This is the best directed film in the franchise in which Alfonso Cuaron truly gave us a masterpiece of a film that every movie aficionado must watch, understand and feel. I won't reveal much but it truly is the best film in the franchise(in my humble opinion)
Book-Movie score: 8/10
A great 9.5/10
