Ship of Theseus is a 2013 Indian movie, you probably wouldn't have heard of it until now since we all were busy watching Dhoom 3, Aashiqui 2, Krrish 3 and Chennai Express in the same year. But you have a chance now to watch this beautiful film, and believe me...you should watch this film if you like movies dealing on human psychology, human nature and the very idea of mortality
The movie is the debut film of Anand Gandhi who received a national award for best film for the same film. The film revolves around the paradox of Ship Of Theseus. The paradox asks us the question that if the parts of a ship are replaced one by one and after some time each part is new does that make a new ship ? if you don't understand it then the film helps you understand the concept in the first 5 minutes. The film follows a structure called multi-linear narrative where three seemingly unconnected stories combine to form perfect sense in the last 15-20 minutes of the film.
The first story is about a blind photographer
The second story is about a monk fighting for animal welfare and how he refuses to take medicines for his treatment for liver cirrhosis as he thinks that animals were abused for the making of this medicine.
The third story is about a man fighting for kidney rackets.
At first sight these stories would look different to you but they are all interconnected. The film asks some brilliant questions on mortality, how we perceive human nature, how we look at nature around us and much more. The film is beautifully shot with some brilliant cinematography, I love the fact that the 2/3 of the film is in English language and it makes perfect sense from story point of view helps in reaching a wide audience. This was the first film whose ending took me some time to understand, the movie is slow paced and dialogue driven and I love these kind of films since it gives time for character development.
The acting is phenomenal where you can understand the very nature of these people just by looking at their expression, kudos to Neeraj Kabi for actually shedding a lot of weight for this film(you'll understand what I mean once you watch the film). The film is not laugh-out-loud funny but it is a witty movie with some really great chuckling moments. I have to give props to Kiran Rao (Wife of Aamir Khan) for not taking his husband as a character in this film, though she herself had stated in an interview that she wanted the film to be story driven and not based on star-power. Overall one of the most significant films to come out of Bollywood in a very long time
INDIVISUAL SCORES:
Story: 9/10 (I personally wasn't invested in the first story but that's up-to the audience to decide)
Direction: 10/10(Beautifully shot)
Acting: 10/10(Sheer perfection)
Music: 9/10(Soulful and captivating)
Cinematography: 10/10(Shows the true image of India)
FINAL SCORE:
9.6/10 (Watch the film if you like character driven film, not for hardcore action, thriller fans out there)
Also, the film has a 100% rotten tomatoes score and an 8/10 on IMDB
Next blog will be me sharing my thoughts on a trailer released recently
